Happy New Year! Last year, instead of making a list of resolutions, I decided to choose one word to direct my year and goals. My one little word for last year was DISCIPLINE, and I don’t feel like I did a very good job of being intentional and focusing on the word and what it meant like I should. While I feel that I fell short in instilling discipline in all areas of my life, and could probably use another year (or five) focusing on that one area of my life, I felt like I needed a new word that matched up with my goals and attitude for this new year.
Before choosing my word, I made a list of my goals:
- Cook more healthy meals and eat out less
- Save money
- Spend less time on social media/my phone
- Spend more quality time with family and friends
- Read more books
- Be more intentional with my time
As I thought about each of those goals, I kept coming back to one word – SAVOR.
To me, the word savor means “to enjoy something completely.” That is exactly what I want to do this year – I want to enjoy every moment completely. My goals for the year are focused on slowing down and being intentional about how I spend my time. I want to truly be present in each moment and enjoy all the good things that God is blessing me with during this season of my life. I think the word savor fits my goals and attitude perfectly.
Once I chose my word, I looked for a Bible verse to kind of be my guiding verse for the year. There really aren’t a lot of verses that contain the word savor, but I chose Psalm 34:1 and 8 to compliment my word for the year: “I will bless the Lord at all times: his praise shall continually be in my mouth…O taste and see that the Lord is good: blessed is the man that trusteth in him.” (King James Version)
One thing that I am especially excited about is that I found this great little daily devotional book titled Savor by Shauna Niequist that I am going to be using this year. I’m really excited to have found this great resource to compliment my goals and my one little word!
Do you choose a word to help direct your year? If so, what word did you choose this year? Let me know in the comments!
I choose the word ‘persistence’.
