September Whole30 – Part One

So as of today, we are officially one third of the way through our Whole30!
The Whole30 is a 30 day program designed to reset your system by eliminating problem foods (foods that cause allergies, health problems, etc.) from your diet and eating “clean” foods like fruit, vegetables, and meat. You can find out more about the program here.
This is my second time to do a Whole30 challenge. I did it last October and it really helped me to get into a healthier routine, which is exactly what Jeff and I are trying to do (despite the fact that we just spent 30 minutes talking about all the stuff we wish we could eat right now). I’m also trying to lose the last 10 pounds of baby weight and then some, and this program seemed like a good kick-start to a healthier lifestyle.
I really like the Whole30 because the rules are laid out really well and it is simple to follow. You CAN eat this, you CANT eat that. I like that I know exactly what is and is not allowed. I also like that it is not a weight loss program. Instead, it’s more like a healthy eating boot camp that helps me reset my body and my tastebuds and change my cravings from junk food to real food. I love that the program focuses on what they call non-scale victories, like clearer skin, fewer headaches, and a better mood instead of being all about the numbers on the scale.
What I don’t like about Whole30 is that it is extremely expensive to eat 100% clean for 30 days. Today is Day 10, and we have been to the store multiple times this month to replenish our stock of fresh fruits and veggies, which are always expensive. High quality meat is expensive. Olive, advacado, and coconut oil (vegetable oil is frowned upon) are expensive. And nobody is offering coupons for these things.
Despite the fact that we’ve blown our normal monthly grocery budget buying compliant ingredients, it IS worth it to do this at least once. Here’s why I would recommend Whole30:
- It is time-bound (30 days), so when you begin you already have the end in mind. Eating clean for the 30 days is the goal. It’s not about losing a certain amount of weight or inches, so as lon as you follow the program and don’t cheat, you’re successful. I love that this is about the actual process more than the outcome (because the outcome is different for every person).
- It challenges you to try new things. When you can’t rely on the same old foods you’re always used to eating (like rice, beans, bread), you have to get a little adventurous in the kitchen. The Whole30 Cookbook is a really great resource that I would highly recommend, and you can also find lots of Whole30 recipes online.
- It really does make you feel good. I keep telling Jeff that if he’ll stick it out just a little longer, he will start to really feel awesome. It makes sense: put good things into your body and you get good things back. After the first 10 days or so last time, I felt so much better. My caffeine headache was gone, I wasn’t craving sugar as much, my skin was clearer, and I just felt good. I was even sleeping better. Eating this way really does change how you feel in 30 days.
If you do decide to try this challenge, buy the book! I can’t stress that enough. I tried to do it with just the online resources when I first started it last year, and got the book halfway through my 30 days and it was so much easier with the book as a guide! You can find the book here.
Monday, September 11 – Update: We cheated last night. I know…it’s only 30 days and it shouldn’t be that hard, but IT IS! The important thing is that we had our little slip up (in the form of warm chocolate chip cookies) and now we’re back on track. We fell off the horse and now we’re getting back on. As a matter of fact, I’ve spent a good portion of the day meal planning and making a grocery list, so we’re going to do awesome this next 20 days.
